FREE NEW ZEALAND ONLINE SHOPPING BRIEFLY DELIGHTS CUSTOMERS

Retailer Dick Smith’s website is back online after being hit by an apparent glitch this morning that let shoppers “purchase” all products, including expensive plasma televisions and smartphones, for free.

The glitch let one person purchase a 46-inch plasma Panasonic TV – worth more than $3000 – for free, charging only a $52.50 delivery fee.

The site was taken offline for maintenance but was back by 3.30pm

Members of online technology site Geekzone have been reporting problems with the site for a few weeks, and some were quick to take advantage of this morning’s fault.

One member posted: “I have successfully submitted an order for a 40″ TV and an iPhone, all for the sum of $4.95 delivery which went through on my credit card.”

Dick Smith has issued a tweet, saying it will be in contact with people who have placed orders “to confirm cancellation or whether you would like the items at their correct pricing”.

GOOGLE CHAIRMAN TO TESTIFY AT SENATE HEARING

Reuters) – Google Inc Chairman Eric Schmidt will testify at a September hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Antitrust Subcommittee, Senator Mike Lee said on Friday.

“I look forward to discussing a number of important issues relating to Google and Internet search competition,” Lee said.

Google is in the midst of an antitrust probe by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission over complaints that its search results favor the company’s other services, among other issues

Social network sites ‘have duty’ to stop cyberstalking

Source : BBC Newsbeat

Social networking sites should make it much easier for users to report serious online abuse, MPs have been told.

The first British study into cyberstalking found victims were more likely to be harassed on sites like Facebook than by email or mobile phone.

The authors want sites to sign up to a code of practice setting out how they will deal with threats and abuse.

“They really have a duty to their consumers,” said Prof Carsten Maple at the University of Bedfordshire.

“There needs to be a clear process so users know how to report harassment and a time limit so a site must respond within a set number of days.”

The research was presented to MPs as part of a wider parliamentary inquiry into the problem which is expected to report back next year.

353 British victims of cyberstalking were surveyed for the study.

Half of them said the person harassing them was either unidentified or a complete stranger.

That’s a much higher rate than in face-to-face stalking cases where the perpetrator is more likely to be an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend.

Victims reported a range of health problems from sleep disorders to stress and depression.

“We were amazed by how traumatised some people were who responded to the survey,” said Dr Emma Short, one of the report’s co-authors.

“One of the cases we spoke to couldn’t go to work because her stalker was completely unknown to her.

“She wouldn’t stand on the station platform in case she got pushed in front of a train as they were threatening to do.”

‘Invasion of privacy’

Female victims in the study were more likely to worry about their personal safety and the safety of close family members.

Men tended to worry about the damage to their reputation online.

Saul Katz is 21 and from St Albans in Hertfordshire – he was forced to go to the police after someone duplicated his Facebook profile.

They used dozens of pictures from his own photo album.

“I just didn’t realise my profile was public,” he said.

“He was pretending to look like me then he started adding 15 and 16-year-old girls in the local area and talking to them on Facebook chat.

“I was worried about the girls’ safety but I was also worried about my reputation. It was a massive invasion of privacy.”

He contacted Facebook but was unimpressed with the response.

“I only got general FAQs back. It was an automated response and I thought that should be far more personal,” he said.

After getting the police involved and messaging the impostor directly, the account was eventually deleted, although Saul still has no idea who set it up in the first place.

Other victims of cyber-harassment find it much more difficult to shake off that kind of unwanted attention.

False allegations

Newsbeat spoke to another male victim who had been stalked online by a former workmate for more than three years.

“He started dozens of bogus accounts on every social networking site you can imagine,” he said. “He’s used those to contact my family, my friends and my schoolmates.”

The stalker used those accounts and a series of blogs to spread damaging false allegations.

“It’s extraordinary the length he’s gone to to cause distress to everyone around me,” said the victim.

The authors of the report say websites, internet service providers and mobile phone companies all need to put in place stricter procedures to deal with this type of electronic harassment.

They say some police forces also need to take complaints about internet stalking much more seriously.

Facebook has now set up its own safety advisor board to improve reporting procedures and put in place a simpler system for flagging up cloned or fake profiles.

A spokesman said: “Nothing is more important to us than the safety of the people that use Facebook.

“We’re constantly working to find new ways help people stay safe, such as the reporting tools accessible across almost every page of the site.”

U.S. INTERNET PROVIDERS TO ACT AGAINST ONLINE PIRATES

(Reuters) – Consumers who illegally download copyrighted films, music or television shows might see their Internet speed slowed or access restricted under an industry anti-piracy effort announced on Thursday.

U.S. Internet service providers, including Verizon Communications Inc, Comcast Corp, Time Warner Cable Inc, Cablevision Systems Corp and AT&T Inc agreed to alert customers, up to six times, when it appears their account is used for illegal downloading. Warnings will come as e-mails or pop-up messages.

If suspected illegal activity persists, the provider might temporarily slow Internet speed or redirect the browser to a specific Web page until the customer contacts the company. The user can seek an independent review of whether they acted legally.

Internet access will not be terminated, according to a statement from the industry partners behind the effort. The coalition includes groups representing movie studios, independent film makers and record labels.

The group argues that content piracy costs the U.S. economy more than 373,000 jobs, $16 billion in lost earnings and $3 billion in tax revenue each year.

Industry officials said they thought most people would stop copyright violations once they were warned about illegal activity. The warnings also might alert parents unaware of their children’s activity.

“We are confident that, once informed that content theft is taking place on their accounts, the great majority of broadband subscribers will take steps to stop it,” James Assey, executive vice president of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association, said in a statement.

Two consumer groups said the effort had the “potential to be an important educational vehicle” to help reduce online copyright infringement, but voiced concern about the sanctions.

“We are particularly disappointed that the agreement lists Internet account suspension among the possible remedies,” the Center for Democracy & Technology and Public Knowledge said in a statement.

The groups said it would be “wrong for any (Internet service provider) to cut off subscribers, even temporarily, based on allegations that have not been tested in court.”

The Obama administration welcomed the industry effort.

“We believe it will have a significant impact on reducing online piracy,” Victoria Espinel, the U.S. intellectual property enforcement coordinator, wrote on the White House blog.

The administration expects the organization that implements the program to consult with advocacy groups “to assure that its practices are fully consistent with the democratic values that have helped the Internet to flourish,” she added.

APPLE REVEALS ICLOUD DETAILS AND PRICING

The New York Times) – By Nick Bilton - Apple posted information on its Web site Monday that offers more details about the company’s upcoming iCloud software which will sync customers content between multiple devices.

iCloud, which is expected to begin this fall, will allow Apple customers to share their books, music and photos between multiple computers and mobile devices, including an iPhone and desktop computer. The company will also back up this content in the cloud.

Apple said that customers would be given 5 gigabytes of storage for free. Customers needing more space will be able to purchase additional storage in yearly chunks. Ten gigabytes of additional space will cost $20 a year, 20 gigabytes will cost $40 and 50 gigabytes will cost $100, the company said.

But don’t worry about having to shell out more money to Apple. Most customers will not need to upgrade. Apple noted on its Web site that applications, books and music, will not count against the 5 gigabytes of free storage. Mail, iWork documents, photos and account settings will count towards the iCloud storage. A user could expect to store more than 1,000 photos at no cost.

Apple also activated the iCloud.com Web site on Monday. The site is currently being used for Apple developers to start building third-party applications using the iCloud application programming interface, or A.P.I.

THE FIRST IN LINE FOR THE IPHONE 5

(Metro.co.uk) A refuse collector has binned the day job… to live off free goods. Rob Shoesmith spends his time getting his hands on handouts – and has so far blagged £40,000 worth of gear.

The 29-year-old has been given everything from scented candles and aftershave to use of a £20,000 Chevrolet car, £800 worth of outdoor gear and food from top restaurants.

The freebie grabbing is part of a publicity stunt while he camps outside London’s flagship Apple store to be first in line for the new iPhone 5 later this year.

While stationed outside the Covent Garden branch for about three weeks, he will use his popular blog to promote companies that donate products and services to help him survive the experience.

‘The postman doesn’t like me right now,’ he said, ‘Something’s coming through every day at the moment.’

Rob, from Coventry, made headlines two years ago when his design for an iPhone application was picked for a competition.

He quit working as a binman three weeks ago to work full-time as a marketing executive for Medl Mobile, which makes apps for Apple phones.

The stunt will also help him build contacts with the thousands of companies he has emailed for free goods.

He said: ‘People might look at this and say that I’m being greedy but I want to prove that it can be done in the most over-the-top way.’

He plans to donate reusable items to charity when his experiment is over.

ANGRY BIRDS MAKER SUED BY US FIRM LODSYS FOR ‘VIOLATING PATENTS

The Finnish games company has come under fire from the Texan company for ‘violating Lodsys patents’ which it claims cover the methods Angry Birds uses to allow players to purchase new levels inside its mobile apps.

This alleged control of this type of in app payment has prevented several European games developers launching their apps stateside.

“The US patent system allows software implementations of ideas to be patented, which differs significantly from the European Union, although the European Parliament has been considering aligning patent rights with the US,” according to Start up Smart, a website for new businesses and entrepreneurs.

“The growth of lawsuits in the US by so-called “patent trolls” – which simply demand payments after assessing intellectual property rights – poses a major threat to the burgeoning mobile app market.”

Rovio was unavailable for comment.

HTC SEEKS NEGOTIATIONS WITH APPLE OVER DUAL PATENT RULINGSTechnology — 26 July 2011
HTC’s legal wrangle with Apple took a turn today, when the Taiwanese mobile phone maker said it was willing to negotiate with its Californian counterpart in the ensuing patent fight. As we reported two week ago, the US International Trade Commission ruled that HTC had violated two of Apple’s patents, relating to data-detection and data-transmission technologies.
In a twist, HTC bought out S3 Graphics Co. for $300m earlier this month, just after S3 Graphics had won a similar patent infringement case against Apple, and this buy-out was viewed as HTC beefing up its patent arsenal in its ensuing war with Apple.

And today, as reported on Bloomberg, Winston Yung, Chief Financial Officer at HTC suggested that his company is open to discussing matters with Apple. He says:

“We have to sit down and figure it out. We’re open to having discussions. We are open to all sorts of solutions, as long as the solution and the terms are fair and reasonable. On and off we’ve had discussions with Apple, even before the initial determination came out.”

Whilst it’s thought that there hasn’t been any formal talks between the companies following the two separate patent rulings this month, HTC will have to come out all guns blazing if its to protect its share of the mobile phone market.

As we reported earlier this month, HTC hit record revenues for the third month running in June, but as Bloomberg notes today its shares fell 8.2% after it announced it was buying 3S Graphics on July 6th, from a fund controlled by HTC Chairwoman Cher Wang and VIA Technologies Inc. (2388), which is also chaired by Wang.

HTC is currently paying Microsoft $5 in patent fees for every handset it releases with the Android operating system on it, so the Taiwanese firm will be keen to avoid paying any more in patent fees. But given that the ITC ruled against Apple at the start of the month, finding that it violates two 3S Graphics patents relating to compression technology, HTC will now be in a stronger bargaining position with the iPhone makers.

Apple Mac OS X Lion released

Apple Mac OS X Lion released
by Edwin - on July 21st, 2011

Do you want to experience “the world’s most advanced operating system”? Well, surely you would have heard Apple “roar” when it came to the release of their latest version of the Mac operating system – OS X Lion. This is the 8th iteration of the operating system, bringing to the table (or rather Mac) over 250 new features. You can easily download it from the Mac App Store for $29.99 a pop, with the physical version coming your way in due time just in case you prefer having something physical in your hand for the amount of money exchanged.

Among the features that are found inside OS X Lion would include new Multi-Touch gestures, system-wide support for full screen apps, Mission Control which is an innovative view of everything that runs on your Mac, the Mac App Store that has been built straight into the OS, alongside Launchpad – a new home for all your apps, not to mention an overhauled Mail app.

The goodies do not stop there – how about the Resume feature that is smart enough to bring your apps back just like how you left them when you restarted your Mac, or quit and relaunched an app? This might also help you catch the more careless person who used your Mac while you were away and messed up the desktop icon arrangement, as you can tell right away when you get back.

Ah, the all important Auto Save feature that says it all – it will automatically and continuously save your documents as you work so that in the event of a brownout, you need not bawl like a baby simply because you forgot to save your work for the past 5 hours. Not only that, Versions will help you record the history of your document the moment you create it – reminds me of Google Docs and their version history.

AirDrop is another way to get more social at the office, since it will find nearby Macs and set up a peer-to-peer wireless connection automatically to enable quick and easy file transfer. Anyone going to give Lion a go?

Apple Thunderbolt Display unveiled
by Edwin - on July 21st, 2011

Apple scores another first with their latest Apple Thunderbolt Display, where it is said to be the first of any display in the world that sports Thunderbolt I/O technology (hence its name, of course), making it the ultimate docking station for your Mac notebook. All it takes is a solitary cable so that you are able to hook up a Thunderbolt-enabled Mac to the new 27” Apple Thunderbolt Display, giving you access to a plethora of ports and connectivity options to boot which you will see in the extended post.

Sporting a beautiful 16:9 edge-to-edge glass design, the Thunderbolt Display will rely on IPS technology which your eyes will definitely appreciate – in fact, I am thinking that looking into this display might be the same as the first experience you ever had with the iPhone 4’s screen. Correct me if I am wrong for early adopters of the Thunderbolt Display, where you can do so by leaving a comment.

With an ultra wide 178 degree viewing angle, you can create a full desktop solution with this display after hooking up your Thunderbolt-enabled Mac. Features include an integrated FaceTime HD video camera that delivers crisp video conferencing, a 2.1 speaker system for high quality audio, an integrated MagSafe charger to keep Mac notebooks charged, a trio of USB 2.0 ports (although I would have liked to see USB 3.0 in action here), one FireWire 800 port, one Gigabit Ethernet port and a Thunderbolt port that allows you to daisy chain up to five additional Thunderbolt devices.

With the two bi-directional channels, you are able to enjoy transfer speeds up to an amazing 10Gbps each, now how about that? The built-in ambient light sensor also will help you conserve energy even more as it automatically adjusts the display brightness based on external lighting conditions. Expect the new Thunderbolt Display to arrive within a couple of months’ time via the Apple Store, Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers. It will go for $999, so that gives you 60 days or so to work out your finances to own one.

Apple iPad Wi-Fi+3G with Extra USB Slot

In the past iPhone guru Steve Jobs intimated that Apple had during the tablets development stage tested numerous designs for the Apple iPad, and now one of those previous designs looks to have hit the net showing the Apple iPad Wi-Fi+3G sporting an extra USB slot.

According to an article over on TUAW, the guys over at Patently Apple have come up with a bundle of Apple patents, one of which shows that Apple was at one point considering an extra USB port on the W-Fi+3G Apple iPad for horizontal connectivity.

Apparently the extra slot would have allowed the user to put their iOS tablet in a dedicated landscape dock and simultaneously sync utilising the two USB ports.

Apple now holds the patent for this particular iPad design, but that doesn’t mean Apple will ever deliver that extra USB slot in future models as they may choose to go with wireless syncing and charging, which could be the reason Apple decided not to go with the design in the first place.

But what do the iOS faithful think, would you prefer to have that extra USB slot on your Apple iPad?

Now You Can Check In to Events on Facebook’s iPhone App

As promised, Facebook has released a new version of its iPhone application that gives users the ability to check in to events. Version 3.4, released Monday, also now includes a map view for Places and the ability to unfriend Facebook friends in-app.

The new features, along with subtle news feed improvements and a user interface refresh for notifications, have been worked into the existing Facebook iPhone experience. Only the “Unfriend” button, a new, extended option when viewing a friend’s profile in the app, is explicitly called out with a noticeable red button.

The new event check-in functionality is housed within the events portion of the app. The app user can check in to nearby, upcoming events and tag their friends should they so choose.

Likewise, the map view for Places has been added to the Places section. Here users can toggle between “Activity” and “Map” options to view checkins in the standard list view or switch to see them on a map.

The updates make for a slightly enhanced overall application experience that pushes the user to check in to Facebook events and gives them the ability to unfriend their no-longer-wanted social network buddies.

Mobile continues to be an important priority for the company. Facebook revealed last week that 250 million people are actively using Facebook via mobile devices on a monthly basis. It released a new mobile website for all phones to better accommodate those users. Event checkins, for now, are isolated to the iPhone app.

Twitter has started rolling out a new version of its homepage, simplifying the interface and refining its pitch to potential new users.
The social media service has changed the color scheme from its traditional shades of light blue in favor of a metallic chrome look. The new homepage also no longer features top tweets or trending topics. Instead, Twitter has opted for a simple bar halfway down the screen that features the avatars of its most popular users.

There are a couple of other changes to the interface that focuses on how users interact with the homepage. The search box has been moved down, but a bigger change is that Twitter has made it easier for users to sign up or log in to its website. The “New to Twitter?” section lets users kick start the process of signing up, right from the homepage. The “sign in” area has been expanded as well.

The biggest change, though, may be the homepage’s new language. The old Twitter.com led with “Discover what’s happening right now, anywhere in the world.” The new homepage has a different pitch to prospective users: “Follow your interests: Instant updates from your friends, industry experts, favorite celebrities, and what’s happening around the world.”

It’s a subtle but potentially big difference, as millions of people visit Twitter.com every day. It’s an adjustment to Twitter’s philosophy that it hopes will help it register and retain new users. Twitter is known for constantly updating its homepage in an attempt to refine its message and draw in new users.

What do you think of Twitter’s homepage? We want to hear your thoughts in the comments.

http://mashable.com/2011/03/30/google-plus-one-button/

Google is making a big new push into social with a feature called “+1” that is similar in purpose to the Facebook “Like” button, but integrated directly into the world’s biggest search engine.

Starting Wednesday, users who opt into the +1 button experiment (and soon everyone else) in Google Labs will start seeing a +1 icon next to each link in Google search results.

Google defines this action as a “public stamp of approval,” and it is exactly that. When you +1 something, your name becomes associated with that link “in search, on ads, and across the web,” according to the company. It also shows up in a feed on your Google Profile, which is required to use the product.

The move builds on a number of social features that Google introduced in search earlier this year, such as the ability to see which friends have tweeted a given link in search results. Today’s move, however, is clearly something much bigger.

Beyond showing up in search results, Google plans to offer to publishers a +1 button that lets readers +1 something without leaving the publisher’s site. Facebook has a big head start here with its Like button — some 2 million sites and counting have it installed — but Google’s button will instantly have a lot of appeal, given the company says +1 data will directly influence its market share dominating search rankings. Similarly, we have to imagine that +1 is more bad news for content farms, whose content is less likely to be shared.

In another twist, users will also be able to +1 ad, which essentially adds a “recommended by friends” component to AdWords and AdSense. as the company explains on the AdWords blog.

Facebook feature converts profiles to business pages

(Credit: Facebook)

Facebook users ready to move from a personal profile to a business page can now make the switch through a new process offered by the company.
Sparing people from the chore of building a business page from scratch, Facebook's Profile To Business Page Migration tool can provide a head start by just converting an existing personal profile. The process is geared for a variety of business types and categories, including local companies, larger organizations, public figures, causes, and even individual products.
The migration works by converting all of a user's friends into fans and moving over his or her profile photos. All other content, including wall posts and extra photos, won't come along for the ride. After choosing the appropriate business category, a user can specify a name, subcategory, and a few other items. Once the business page is live, the user can then fill in any other necessary details.
Be aware that the conversion is a one-way trip. Once it's finished, you can't transform your business page back into a personal profile. Facebook advises users who need to save content from their personal profile to download the information through the data downloader feature that the company set up last year.
You'll find more details on the conversion process and tips on maintaining a business page at Facebook's Help Center.
Though this new conversion may benefit business users, Facebook isn't just offering it out of the goodness of its heart. The company warns that having a personal profile for anything other than a single individual violates its guidelines. For such profiles, Facebook suggests converting them to business pages, otherwise users could lose access to their own content.
